The Delhi Cabinet has approved the formation of the Delhi State AYUSH Society (DSAS) under the National AYUSH Mission (NAM). This decision marks a significant step toward integrating traditional systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Naturopathy, and Homeopathy into the capital’s public healthcare system.
The official proposal has already been forwarded to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena for final clearance. Once approved, the society will be formally registered under the Societies Registration Act and will become the nodal agency for all AYUSH-related activities in Delhi.
Why is this important?
AYUSH, which stands for Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy, represents a group of time-tested traditional healing systems that have been practiced in India for centuries. Although modern medicine continues to play a key role in treatment and emergency care, the importance of preventive health and holistic well-being is growing among people, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The creation of DSAS is seen as a move to bridge the gap between modern and traditional medicine. A senior government official said, “It will streamline AYUSH services and unlock greater access to central support.”
Role and Responsibility of DSAS
The newly formed Delhi State AYUSH Society will be responsible for coordinating and monitoring various projects across the city. This includes setting up wellness centres, organizing outreach programs, and integrating AYUSH practices with government-run hospitals and clinics.
The central government will fund 60 percent of the costs, while the Delhi government will bear the remaining 40 percent. This cost-sharing structure is part of the National AYUSH Mission, which was launched in 2014 as a centrally sponsored scheme to promote traditional medicine and enhance public health.
Boost for Existing AYUSH Infrastructure
At present, Delhi has four AYUSH hospitals located in Karol Bagh, Defence Colony, Dabur Khera, and Nanakpura. According to officials, the DSAS will help these institutions function more efficiently by improving coordination and resource management.
The state society is also expected to train health workers, launch public health campaigns, and encourage research in AYUSH disciplines. In addition, the society will help in policy implementation and ensure that quality standards are maintained across all traditional medicine services.
Public Reaction and Expert Opinions
Healthcare experts and citizens have welcomed the initiative. Dr. Meenakshi Sharma, an Ayurvedic practitioner in Delhi, stated, “This move will give traditional medicine the formal support it needs. Many patients prefer natural remedies for chronic illnesses, and now they can access them within the government system.”
A survey conducted by a private health firm in 2022 showed that over 55 percent of urban Indians had tried at least one form of traditional medicine in the last year. The increasing demand shows the relevance of such initiatives in today’s health-conscious society.
Insightful Take
The creation of the Delhi State AYUSH Society reflects the government’s aim to build an inclusive and pluralistic healthcare system. As citizens become more aware of wellness and preventive care, the blend of modern and traditional medical approaches could lead to better health outcomes. If implemented successfully, DSAS may become a model for other states across India.
