Valley of Flowers Blooms Anew: Nehru Park Set to Become Delhi’s Year-Round Floral Destination

Delhi's Nehru Park is set for a colourful makeover as NDMC plans a year-round Valley of Flowers with tulips, seasonal blooms and visitor-friendly facilities.

The New Delhi Municipal Council plans to develop a dedicated tulip garden at Nehru Park, complete with parking, recreational facilities and seasonal flowers to attract visitors throughout the year.

In the heart of Chanakyapuri, where diplomatic residences meet carefully tended green spaces, a transformation is taking root. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is preparing to turn a section of Nehru Park into a sprawling “Valley of Flowers”, a dedicated tulip garden designed not merely as a seasonal spectacle but as a year-round destination for families, photographers and anyone seeking a moment of natural beauty in the capital.

From Shanti Path to Nehru Park: A Bigger Vision

For years, Delhi’s most celebrated tulip displays have unfolded along Shanti Path in the diplomatic enclave. Last season alone, roughly 1.46 lakh tulip bulbs painted the lawns opposite the Russian Embassy in vivid reds, yellows and pinks.

The brief flowering window, typically just 20 to 25 days between February and March, drew large crowds. However, the experience came with familiar frustrations.

Cars lined the roadside, traffic crawled and visitors found themselves unable to linger. There was no proper parking, little space for families to spread out and almost no opportunity to enjoy the blooms beyond hurried photographs.

NDMC Chairman Manoj Kumar Dwivedi has acknowledged these limitations. The civic body now wants to expand its tulip cultivation efforts significantly.

“We have been doing it at Shanti Path. Although it’s a delight for passers-by and visitors, there is no parking possible there. It leads to jams with cars being parked on the roadside and visitors cannot spend longer time enjoying the bloom.”

The proposed project at Nehru Park aims to address these problems while creating a more comfortable experience for visitors.

Dedicated Parking, Drone Photography and Musical Events

The chosen site inside Nehru Park will feature a large dedicated parking area, reducing the need for visitors to leave their vehicles along the roadside.

Alongside the flowers, planners are incorporating recreational activities, spaces for drone photography and musical events.

The objective is to encourage people to stay longer, arrive with their families and treat the visit as a complete outing rather than a quick stop for photographs.

Dwivedi has indicated that the civic body has already identified the location and begun preparatory work.

Importantly, the larger and better-organised tulip garden is expected to supplement the existing Shanti Path displays rather than replace them.

A Garden That Will Change Colours With Every Season

What sets the proposed Valley of Flowers apart is its ambition to maintain a colourful landscape throughout the year.

Tulips are famously short-lived in Delhi’s climate. Once their brief spring display ends, the flower beds can lose much of their visual appeal.

NDMC intends to overcome this limitation by planting a succession of seasonal flowers, ensuring that the garden remains attractive long after the tulips fade.

The landscape will change with the seasons while retaining its identity as a floral destination.

If implemented successfully, this approach could transform Nehru Park into a place that offers a different experience with each visit.

Climate-Controlled Storage to Reduce Tulip Imports

A parallel initiative is underway to make Delhi’s tulip cultivation efforts more sustainable.

At Lodhi Garden, NDMC is developing climate-controlled chambers to store and reuse tulip bulbs from one season to the next.

The proposed system could reduce dependence on imported bulbs and potentially lower cultivation costs and environmental impact.

If successful, the initiative may also provide a useful model for managing seasonal flowering plants in other public gardens across the city.

Why Delhi Needs More Floral Destinations

Delhi’s residents have demonstrated considerable enthusiasm for well-maintained green spaces that offer more than walking paths.

The annual tulip festival at Shanti Path has become a popular attraction, drawing families, amateur photographers and social-media enthusiasts.

Expanding the experience into a properly designed park setting with visitor amenities addresses a genuine gap in the capital’s recreational infrastructure.

Dedicated parking could improve accessibility, while music and recreational activities may encourage longer visits.

There is also a broader urban consideration.

As Delhi becomes increasingly crowded, public parks that function as genuine destinations, where people can spend several hours rather than a brief half-hour, become more valuable.

Nehru Park already offers expansive lawns, mature trees and a relatively peaceful atmosphere compared with many crowded public spaces.

Adding a signature floral attraction with supporting infrastructure could strengthen its role as a community asset.

When Will Nehru Park’s Valley of Flowers Open?

NDMC has not announced a firm opening date for the proposed Valley of Flowers.

Officials have indicated that site preparation is underway and that the larger vision will develop over successive planting seasons.

The project is intended to become a permanent floral attraction rather than a temporary seasonal display.

For now, the focus remains on preparing the identified site, improving infrastructure and developing arrangements for future flower cultivation.

When the first new plantings take hold, Delhi could gain a floral landmark that matches the enthusiasm of the thousands who visit its annual tulip displays.

The Valley of Flowers promises something beyond the brief brilliance of tulips: a public garden where changing seasons bring new colours, new experiences and fresh reasons to return.
