Living under a concrete roof is a dream of everyone in India. This can be understood by the fact that the central government of India has set a target of 30 million houses to be made in urban as well as rural India under the PM Awas scheme for FY 2024–25. While announcing this target in budget session 2024, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has increased 68% funds for the development of rural areas. The government has added INR 22,000 crore more to the housing scheme fund. Previously allocated fund was INR 32,000 crore. The target of houses to be made under the PM Awas scheme has also been revised. Three crores more houses have been added to the previously set target, which appears to be a healthy consideration of the pathetic plight of rural India despite the fact that every Indian enjoys hearing “India is the fastest growing economy of the world and it ranks fifth in terms of size.”
However, the central government does not help to build concrete houses only but also cooking gases, water, and power connections. Under this scheme, the government has constructed 2.63 crores as against the set target of 2.94 crores so far. And, this is why the burden of three crore more houses to be built in the next five years has been carried forward. The Finance Minister of India herself explained in an interim budget speech in February 2024 about the burden of three crore more houses to be taken up in the next five years in order to meet the deficit of the set target. On June 10, 2024, the government gave approval to compensate the deficient numbers of the set target. 20 million houses would be constructed in rural areas and 10 million houses in urban areas.
The PM Awas scheme in rural areas is a combination of two other welfare schemes that run separately in the name of the Ujjwala Scheme (cooking gas connection) and the Saubhagya Scheme (electricity connection). The government of India has developed a comprehensive package to relieve rural residents of the hardship of basic necessities. Addressing the 17th Lok Sabha, combining both houses, President Droupadi Murmu said, “Providing pucca houses under the PM Awas scheme has enhanced the social status and dignity of rural families.” Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan are the top-ranking states for completing the construction of pucca houses in rural areas.
Gittimitti.com, a construction company working in rural areas to help people build concrete or pucca houses, expressed openly, “Living under the concrete roof in rural India is a dream for many. They save money by working their whole lives to construct a pucca house because floods, earthquakes, and many other natural calamities destroy their Kaccha houses. And they have been going through it every year. Therefore, a concrete or pucca house is going to provide them a huge relief.”
