DU Forms Panel to Review Seat Increase for One-Year PG Programmes

Will more students get a chance to study at DU? A new committee is reviewing seat increases for the university's one-year postgraduate programmes ahead of the 2026-27 admissions.

The University of Delhi has constituted a high-level committee to examine proposals from several departments seeking an increase in seats for its one-year postgraduate programmes for the 2026-27 academic session. The decision was announced through a notification issued by the registrar's office on Friday.

According to the university, several departments have requested a higher intake in the newly introduced one-year postgraduate courses. The committee has been tasked with assessing these requests and recommending whether an increase is feasible, along with the measures required to implement it.

Committee Members

The committee will be chaired by Professor K Ratnabali, Dean of Academic Affairs. Its members include the Dean of Admissions, the Dean of Social Work, the Head of the Department of Chemistry, the Joint Registrar (Legal), and the Deputy Registrar (Recruitment and Promotion). The Deputy Registrar will serve as the Member Secretary of the panel.

Panel's Mandate

The committee will assess the feasibility of increasing intake across the university's one-year postgraduate programmes. It has also been asked to recommend the academic and administrative arrangements required to implement any approved increase.

The panel has been given 10 days to submit its recommendations, indicating that the university intends to take a decision before the admission process for the 2026-27 academic session progresses further.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Professor Ratnabali said the committee would meet at the earliest in view of the urgency of the matter and submit its recommendations to the university.

Background

Delhi University began admissions for the first batch of its one-year postgraduate programmes earlier this month, with the first phase of registrations opening on July 4. The programmes mark a significant departure from the earlier system under which all postgraduate degrees were offered over two years until the 2025-26 academic session.

The one-year postgraduate route has been introduced for students who have completed the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) under the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022. Eligible candidates are applying through a dedicated admission portal created by the university.

The initiative is part of the higher education reforms introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which allows graduates of four-year undergraduate programmes to complete a postgraduate degree in one year instead of the conventional two-year duration.

What It Means for Applicants

If the committee recommends an increase in seats and the university approves it, more applicants could secure admission to the one-year postgraduate programmes for the 2026-27 academic session.

The university has not disclosed which departments have sought additional seats or the extent of the proposed increase. The committee's recommendations, expected within 10 days, are likely to play a key role in shaping admissions for the inaugural batch of these programmes.
