As Indian freestyle wrestling enters a phase of transition, one name continues to shine with resilience and consistency — Aman Sehrawat. At just 22, this young grappler has once again demonstrated why he’s one of the country’s most promising athletes. On Monday (July 4, 2025), Aman clinched a berth for the World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb this September, cementing his place among the elite of the sport.
At the recent selection trials in Lucknow, Sehrawat breezed through the 57kg category, defeating both Sumit and Rahul with clear technical superiority. His victory wasn’t just about securing a ticket to Zagreb — it was a reaffirmation of his grit, talent, and the work he has put in through injury and intense training.
Aman’s journey has not been without hurdles. After bagging a bronze at the 2022 Asian Games and gold at the 2023 Asian Championships, the young wrestler faced a setback earlier this year with a knee injury that kept him off the mat for months. Missing the trials for the Asian Championships was a tough pill to swallow, but Aman didn't let it break his spirit. Instead, he focused on recovery and gradually returned to competitive form at the Ulaanbaatar Ranking Series, where he clinched a bronze. That medal, though not gold, was a personal victory — proof that he was back and ready for bigger battles.
“I was competing after almost a year. It was an opportunity to get back on the mat and test my fitness,” said Sehrawat. “As an Olympic medallist, I understand that people expect me to return with a medal from the World Championships, and I will give my best shot for gold.”
This will be his maiden appearance at the World Championships, and he’s ready to embrace the challenge. Training with some of the best in Japan and Russia, he has sharpened his leg defence and overall technique. “The Worlds will be a good test,” he said, noting that he has sparred with Olympic champions like Rei Higuchi (Japan) and Spencer Lee (USA). These sessions have not only tested him but also refined his skills against world-class competitors.
Aman isn't alone on this journey. India’s men’s freestyle team is looking strong, with familiar names like Deepak Punia (92kg), Sujeet Kalkal (65kg), and Rohit (70kg) joining the ranks. The trials have assembled a solid ten-member squad aiming to make a statement on the global stage.
For Indian sports lovers, Aman Sehrawat’s rise is a glorious wrestling success story — one built on dedication, resilience, and the hunger to excel. He embodies the spirit of a new generation of Indian athletes who are not only competing with the best but are ready to beat them on their turf.
As the World Championships in Zagreb approach, the spotlight will be firmly on Aman. And if his journey so far is any indicator, he will fight, inspire, and perhaps even bring home gold.
India is watching, Aman. And we believe.
