A national research opportunity at ICAR-IARI is opening doors for professionals ready to strengthen indigenous food systems and fight malnutrition in tribal communities.
A significant research opportunity has opened for professionals in agricultural and nutritional sciences. The Division of Agricultural Economics at the ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, will conduct a walk-in interview for the position of Senior Research Fellow (SRF) under a DBT–Wellcome India Alliance funded project.
The project, titled “Characterizing, Reviving, Supporting, Monitoring and Managing Sustainable Food Systems to Address Malnutrition in Indigenous Tribal Communities of India” (CARISMMA), focuses on strengthening indigenous food systems to combat malnutrition among tribal populations. It brings together traditional ecological knowledge and contemporary scientific research to address persistent nutritional challenges.
The CARISMMA study aims to examine and document indigenous food systems that are gradually eroding across India’s 705 recognized tribal communities. The research will support the revival and strengthening of these systems through community-based interventions. Particular attention will be given to improving nutritional outcomes for women and children under the age of five. The study also integrates agroecological data, nutritional biomarkers, and gut microbiome analysis to understand how resilient food systems can be built in vulnerable regions.
The recruitment is for one Senior Research Fellow on a temporary and contractual basis. Key details are provided below:

Candidates are advised to visit the official IARI website (www.iari.res.in) to download the detailed advertisement and confirm eligibility criteria. Typically, SRF positions require a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Agricultural Economics, Nutrition, Public Health, Social Sciences, or allied fields. Candidates with a three-year bachelor’s degree may require NET qualification as per prevailing norms. Applicants should verify the specific requirements mentioned in the official notification.
Interested candidates must bring a detailed curriculum vitae, original certificates from Class 10 onwards, and self-attested copies of all academic qualifications and experience certificates. Relevant field experience, particularly in tribal development, food system research, socio-economic surveys, public health nutrition, or community-based interventions, will be valuable during evaluation.
Applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the objectives of the CARISMMA project. A clear understanding of how indigenous knowledge systems can contribute to sustainable nutrition strategies may strengthen their candidature. Since this is a walk-in interview, candidates should report before the specified time. Entry may be restricted once the screening process begins.
The position provides an opportunity to work within ICAR, India’s leading agricultural research institution. Senior Research Fellow appointments typically offer a monthly fellowship in the range of ₹35,000 to ₹37,000 along with House Rent Allowance, as per funding agency norms. Beyond financial support, the project offers exposure to interdisciplinary research and policy-relevant fieldwork in food security and tribal welfare.
The CARISMMA initiative reflects a broader national effort to integrate scientific research with community knowledge systems to address malnutrition in marginalized populations. For professionals seeking meaningful engagement in sustainable food systems research, this fellowship presents a timely opportunity.
