Indian Wrestlers Sujeet and Abhimanyu Secure Gold at Asian Championships

India shines at the Asian Wrestling Championships as Sujeet and Abhimanyu clinch gold, marking a powerful statement on the continental stage

In a significant display of skill and determination, Indian wrestlers Sujeet and Abhimanyu achieved a remarkable feat by winning gold medals at the Asian Wrestling Championships held in Bishkek. Their victories came on the penultimate day of the competition, providing a major boost to the Indian wrestling contingent. Both athletes overcame tough opponents in their respective weight categories, showcasing the growing depth and resilience of Indian freestyle wrestling.

Sujeet, a World U-23 champion, competed in the men’s 65kg freestyle category. His journey to gold was marked by a dominant performance against Uzbekistan’s Umidjon Jalolov. The match began cautiously, with both wrestlers testing each other and avoiding early risks. Jalolov held firm in the opening round, limiting Sujeet’s attacking opportunities. However, the bout turned decisively in the second round. Demonstrating exceptional agility and speed, Sujeet broke through his opponent’s defense and seized control.

This victory carried historical significance, as it made Sujeet the first Indian since Bajrang Punia in 2019 to win an Asian Championships gold medal in the 65kg category. It also marked his fifth career win over Jalolov, underlining his consistent dominance in this rivalry.

Shortly after Sujeet’s triumph, Abhimanyu added a second gold medal to India’s tally in the men’s 70kg freestyle final. His victory stood out for its resilience and composure under pressure. Facing Mongolia’s Tulga Tumur Ochir, Abhimanyu found himself trailing 0-2 early in the bout. Despite the setback, he remained calm and gradually built momentum.

Through disciplined technique and strategic execution, Abhimanyu overturned the deficit and secured a 5-3 victory. His ability to recover from a difficult start and perform under high-stakes conditions became one of the defining highlights of the day for the Indian camp.

India came close to securing a third gold medal when Sandeep Mann competed in the 79kg final. However, he narrowly missed the top podium spot after a closely contested 1-2 defeat. Despite the disappointment, his silver medal added to India’s strong overall performance.

Earlier, Ankush contributed to the medal tally by clinching bronze in the 57kg category. He delivered a convincing 8-2 victory over Japan’s Fuga Sasaki, further strengthening India’s presence on the podium.

With these results, India’s total medal count at the championships rose to two gold, four silver, and eight bronze medals. The achievements of Sujeet and Abhimanyu have set a positive tone heading into the final day of the competition.

Attention now turns to key contenders such as Aman Sehrawat, an Olympic bronze medalist competing in the 61kg category, and Mukul Dahiya in the 86kg category. Aman, who previously secured gold in the 57kg division, is testing himself in a higher weight class and has already demonstrated his grit by winning a closely fought semi-final against Iran’s Ahmad Mohammadnezhadjavan. Meanwhile, Mukul Dahiya showcased remarkable determination by overturning a six-point deficit in his semi-final against a Kazakh opponent.

As the championships approach their conclusion, the gold medal victories of Sujeet and Abhimanyu remain the standout achievements, reflecting the rising standards and competitive strength of Indian wrestling on the continental stage.
