Noida Golf Course's ₹31-Crore Upgrade Brings India's First Sun Queen Turf

India's first Sun Queen turf, tougher fairways and a ₹31-crore revamp could change the golfing experience in Noida.

Indian golf has a fresh talking point in the National Capital Region. The Noida Golf Course (NGC), located in Sector 38B, is undergoing a major ₹31-crore upgrade. The project includes a ₹22.5-crore renovation of the golf course and an ₹8.55-crore modernisation of its clubhouse, officials said on Tuesday.

The upgrade promises better playing surfaces, a redesigned course, improved drainage and modern water-management systems. It could also set a new benchmark for golf facilities in India.

A Two-Phase Rebuild

The first phase of the course renovation is expected to be completed by March 2027, while the second and final phase is likely to take another year or more.

Spread across 98 acres, the 36-year-old golf course has approximately 5,000 members. The renovation aims to upgrade playing facilities, improve course design and introduce modern irrigation and water-management systems.

For existing members, there is some relief. Nearly half of the course will remain operational during the renovation, allowing golfers to continue playing without major disruption.

Sun Queen Grass: First for India

One of the biggest highlights of the project is the introduction of Sun Queen, a premium Bermuda grass variety that will be laid across the fairways and tee boxes. According to officials, this high-performance turf is being used for the first time in India.

The greens will feature Tif-dwarf grass, designed to meet United States Golf Association (USGA) specifications, an internationally recognised benchmark for golf course surfaces.

Dr Steven Menezes, secretary of the NGC management board, said the combination would provide an exceptional playing surface throughout the year.

For golfers, this could mean more consistent ball lies, better playing conditions and more predictable putting surfaces. These improvements are particularly relevant in Delhi-NCR, where golf courses must withstand scorching summers, foggy winters and heavy monsoon rainfall.

A Tougher and Smarter Course Layout

The redesigned course will introduce new landforms, undulations, improved drainage across all holes, automated irrigation and strategically positioned bunkers.

Multiple tee boxes will offer different levels of difficulty, allowing beginners and experienced golfers to approach the same hole with varying challenges.

Water management is another major component of the renovation. Eight interconnected water bodies will support drainage and store treated water from a sewage treatment plant (STP) for irrigation.

The system is expected to improve water efficiency and reduce dependence on freshwater resources. This is particularly important at a time when the environmental cost of maintaining large green spaces is receiving greater attention.

Vijit Nandrog, a club member and architect of the renovation, said the existing course lacked character and did not challenge golfers sufficiently. He also pointed to the ageing irrigation infrastructure.

The objective, he explained, is to create a substantially different playing experience and offer members a more challenging course.

A New Clubhouse Experience

The renovation extends beyond the golf course.

The existing cottage-style clubhouse is being replaced with a more contemporary dining and recreational space.

The first-floor function room and adjoining terrace are being converted into a restaurant and bar overlooking the golf course. The ground-floor bar is also being redesigned to accommodate more visitors.

Meanwhile, the underused card room will be transformed into another dining and bar facility, according to the management committee.

The changes are intended to make the clubhouse a more attractive social destination alongside its sporting facilities.

Membership Demand Far Exceeds Supply

The Noida Golf Course is already operating at capacity, with more than 1,300 applicants reportedly waiting for membership.

Entrance fees currently start at ₹3 lakh and reportedly go up to ₹10 lakh. Waiting periods also vary significantly across membership categories.

General civilian applicants may have to wait around three years, while government officials could face waiting periods of up to 15 years.

These figures underline the growing demand for organised golf facilities in the NCR. However, they also highlight the limited accessibility of premium golfing infrastructure.

Why the Upgrade Matters for Indian Golf

India has produced internationally recognised golfers, including Jeev Milkha Singh, Anirban Lahiri and Aditi Ashok.

Their achievements have helped raise India's profile in international golf. But developing the next generation of players requires more than individual talent. It also depends on access to well-maintained courses, quality coaching and challenging playing conditions.

A course featuring USGA-specification greens, varied tee positions and strategically designed hazards can provide NCR golfers with playing conditions closer to those encountered at international competitions.

However, there is an important question about accessibility.

With membership waiting lists stretching for years and entrance fees running into lakhs, the benefits of this upgrade are likely to remain concentrated among a relatively small group.

Whether the Noida Golf Course extends access through tournaments, junior development programmes or guest-playing opportunities will determine how much the project contributes to Indian golf beyond its existing membership.

Final Take

The March 2027 deadline for the first phase will be an important milestone. Equally significant will be the performance of Sun Queen grass through a complete Delhi-NCR weather cycle.

If the new turf, drainage and irrigation systems deliver the expected results, the project could encourage other Indian golf clubs to reconsider their course-maintenance standards.

For Noida's golfers, the prospect is an upgraded playing experience. For Indian golf, the larger test will be whether better infrastructure can translate into wider participation and stronger opportunities for emerging players.
