The Asha Raman Foundation, guided by its motto “Power of Hope”, is striving to bring dignity, education, and livelihood opportunities to underprivileged families. Where poverty, unemployment, and lack of education have long dictated lives, the foundation has stepped in to create pathways of empowerment.
At the helm of this mission is Mukund Shandilya, a young social entrepreneur who chose service over comfort. His journey reflects both compassion and resilience. In this candid conversation, he shares what drives him, the challenges of grassroots work, and the vision that fuels Asha Raman Foundation’s expanding reach.

Q. Can you tell us what inspired you to start the Asha Raman Foundation?
Asha Raman Foundation was born out of a simple but profound belief—that every family, no matter how poor, deserves dignity, opportunity, and hope. Growing up in Bihar, I saw children dropping out of school to work, families struggling without basic healthcare, and women confined to limited roles. These realities touched me deeply. I wanted to create a platform that could break this cycle and give people the tools to transform their own lives.
Q. What are the core areas your foundation focuses on?
Our focus areas are education, healthcare awareness, women’s empowerment, and livelihood creation. We distribute learning materials, provide scholarships, run free health camps, and conduct skill-training programs like tailoring and digital literacy. The idea is not charity alone, but sustainable empowerment—helping families become self-reliant with knowledge and skills.
Q. Bihar already has many NGOs. What makes Asha Raman Foundation different?
What sets us apart is our grassroots approach. We don’t operate from a distance; we live among the communities we serve. This allows us to truly understand their struggles and build trust. Rather than offering short-term relief, we focus on long-term change—ensuring children stay in school, women learn income-generating skills, and communities grow confident enough to stand on their own.
Q. What challenges do you face while working on the ground?
Challenges are plenty. Limited funds remain the biggest hurdle, followed by bureaucratic red tape. At times, there’s resistance from within the community itself because change can be uncomfortable. But every success—like a girl completing her education or a family gaining financial stability—reminds us that the struggle is worth it.
Q. What are your future plans for the foundation?
We plan to expand to more villages across Bihar and eventually to other states. Our dream is to establish community schools, digital libraries, and skill-development centers. The ultimate goal is to ensure that no child is denied education and no family is left without opportunities for livelihood.
