Iran Seeks to Move World Cup Matches Out of the USA

As geopolitics collides with the world’s biggest sporting stage, Iran’s World Cup journey hangs in the balance—will football find a way, or will conflict redraw the game’s boundaries?

The participation of the Iran national football team in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 has become a topic of global discussion. While the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirms that Iran is still set to play, the Iranian football federation is now negotiating with FIFA to move its matches from the United States to Mexico.

Concerns Over Player Safety

The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran is placed in Group G along with Belgium national football team, Egypt national football team, and New Zealand national football team. According to the original schedule, Iran is supposed to play two group matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.

However, recent geopolitical tensions have created uncertainty. In late February 2026, the United States and Israel launched air strikes on Iran. This conflict has raised serious concerns about the safety of the Iranian players and staff on American soil. Iranian football president Mehdi Taj stated that the team will not travel to the United States because their security cannot be guaranteed.

Statements from Leaders

U.S. President Donald Trump recently shared his views on social media. He said that the Iranian team is welcome to participate in the tournament. However, he also suggested that it might not be "appropriate" for them to be there for their own "life and safety."

In response, the Iranian football federation posted on social media that no one can exclude them from the global tournament. They pointed out that FIFA runs the World Cup, not any specific country or leader. They argued that if a host country cannot provide security for participating teams, then that host country should be the one excluded.

The Stance of AFC and FIFA

Despite these tensions, the Asian Football Confederation remains hopeful. AFC General Secretary Windsor John mentioned in a news conference that they have heard nothing to suggest Iran will withdraw. He said, "They are our member. We want them to play." He added that the Iranian federation has expressed its intention to participate in the World Cup.

On the other hand, FIFA has not yet confirmed any changes to the match venues. A FIFA spokesperson stated that they are in regular contact with all member associations, including Iran. Currently, FIFA is looking forward to all teams competing according to the schedule announced in December 2025.

Possible Relocation to Mexico

The Iranian federation is now officially pushing to move its games to Mexico. Relocating matches at this stage would be a major logistical challenge for the organizers. However, there are past examples where matches were moved for security reasons. For instance, in 2025, a qualifying match between Scotland national football team and Belarus national football team was moved to a neutral venue due to political reasons.

Iran is a strong footballing nation in Asia and is currently ranked No. 20 in the world. This will be their fourth consecutive World Cup appearance. Fans across the world are waiting to see if a compromise can be reached so that the "Beautiful Game of Football" can continue despite the ongoing regional conflict.
