New Delhi, India – Hindu College, a premier institution under Delhi University (DU), has introduced a pioneering certificate course titled “Sustainable Perfumery: The Art of Crafting Fragrance and Nurturing Careers” as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework. This 10-month program, launched in January 2025, marks the first such initiative in India, blending science, creativity, and sustainability to train students in perfume-making.
Hindu College’s Academic Excellence
Renowned for its academic rigor, Hindu College consistently ranks among India’s top institutions. It secured the “#1 position in the NIRF 2024 College rankings” and holds top spots in arts, science, and commerce streams according to India Today. The college’s new perfumery course aligns with its legacy of innovation, offering students hands-on learning in a studio equipped with essential oils and lab tools reminiscent of a "Harry Potteresque" classroom.
Bridging DU’s Vision with Industry Needs
Delhi University’s emphasis on skill development under NEP 2020 is reflected in this course. Open to students with a science background, the program includes modules on ethical sourcing, extraction techniques, and entrepreneurship. Arup Srivastava, Principal of Hindu College, highlighted the initiative’s goal: “India’s fragrance industry is booming, but formal training is scarce. This course bridges that gap while fostering sustainability”.
Admissions and Future Prospects
Admissions to the course follow DU’s centralized CUET-UG process, with applications accepted through the university’s Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal. The inaugural batch of eight students includes learners like Naina Kapoor, a chemistry enthusiast from Rajasthan, who aims to merge her passion for science with eco-friendly product design.
DU’s Expanding Academic Portfolio
While Hindu College spearheads this unique program, Delhi University continues to diversify its offerings across 90+ colleges. Recent additions include foreign language certifications and value-added courses, reinforcing DU’s role as a hub for interdisciplinary education.
For aspiring perfumers, Hindu College’s course represents a fragrant blend of tradition and modernity—a testament to DU’s commitment to shaping future-ready professionals.
